Frequently Asked Questions
| Where do I start? |
If you have an injury or a prescription from your doctor for physical therapy, contact us to set up your first physical therapy appointment and find out about insurance coverage. To start Pilates classes, Click here to see our schedule and sign up. Keep in mind if you have never used the reformer, we highly suggest you take our beginners evaluation class so you can be directed to choose the appropriate class or private for your very own special needs and fit. You can Contact Us to schedule a private lesson where a beginner evaluation is not necessary, since you will be getting individual attention through the private session itself.
Tell me about your Pilates classes
We believe that students should be trained in the true essence of Pilates, while also getting a great workout, learning about their body, and having fun! You will get a beginner to advanced workout depending on the class you choose, and you will always be challenged. We have a beautiful and comfortable studio, and instructors with years of experience and varying backgrounds, so you will never get bored and will want to come back for more.
What is physical therapy and do I need it?
Physical Therapy is a medical service covered by insurance that helps you recover from acute or chronic injuries. It usually will occur after a specific injury or surgical procedure, but oftentimes will be done years after an injury! If you are still having pain or problems, you need physical therapy. If you aren't sure if physical therapy is right for you or don't have a doctor to see, contact us and we can help.
Do I need a prescription for physical therapy?
Hawaii is a direct access state, which means that legally you do NOT need a prescription from a doctor to start physical therapy. A few insurances still require that you have one, so you will want to check with your insurance. If you aren't sure how to obtain a prescription, Contact Us and we will help.
Why should I have physical therapy at Harmony?
At Harmony Pilates & Physical Therapy, you will see only licensed physical therapists - never an aide or assistant. Our therapists have over 40 years of combined experience, and are trained in manual therapy, sports injuries, balance issues, prenatal conditions, post-operative rehabilitation, and many other areas. Every appointment is an hour long, and treatments are about you and your goals. We work closely with doctors across Honolulu and all of Oahu, and take most insurance plans.
Will insurance cover my physical therapy at Harmony Pilates & Physical Therapy?
Yes! We do accept most insurance plans for physical therapy, and will work with your insurance to find out your coverage and get the most visits possible for your injury. Many insurance plans have a copay that you will be responsible for, and a possible deductible.Copays vary depending on your insurance plan. Your insurance will be able to tell you your exact deductible or copay. Currently we do not accept AlohaCare or Kaiser for physical therapy.
Will I do Pilates during physical therapy?
All of our physical therapists are trained Pilates instructors and will be able to use the Pilates equipment for your therapy if you choose and it's deemed appropriate. Pilates is not the only thing we do in physical therapy, so if it's not a fit for you we have many different tools to use!
How does Pilates fit in with my current workout program, and how often should I do it?
Pilates fits in great with all fitness programs. You will often find that the core stabilization and abdominal exercises in Pilates will improve your performance in your chosen sport or activity. Most people experience the highest benefit when doing Pilates or coming to physical therapy two to three times a week.
What if I have an injury or health issue?
Pilates was actually first developed as a rehabilitation and physical therapy tool. It is ideal for injury recovery in that you will strengthen muscles while protecting your body and relearning proper movement patterns. If you feel limited in your injury, we recommend starting with the Beginner's Evaluation class and then progressing to Pilates sessions if you choose to. If you are ready to try a class, you may want to start with the introductory class or low back care class. Contact Us us if you aren't sure where to start!
What if I don't have any experience with strength training or being in an exercise class?
Pilates is perfect for you! Our specialized Pilates equipment, one-on-one Pilates instruction and small Pilates class sizes will make you feel comfortable trying something new, yet you will never feel self-conscious. You will be surprised by your own ability.
Can I lose weight with Pilates?
Yes! By using resistance and toning exercises and increasing your heart rate, Pilates can contribute to weight and fat loss and muscle development. At Harmony Pilates & Physical Therapy we believe in a three-tiered system for ultimate health - exercise, eating well and proper supplementation. We will teach all three with our Healthy for Life Program so that you will see permanent weight loss and health results!
What should I bring and/or wear?
Bring water to stay hydrated and wear comfortable clothes to move in (for women suggested exercise pants or short, sports bra and t-shirt/tank - men, suggested shorts and a t-shirt). If you are attending a mat class, feel free to bring your own mat, but we also provide them. No need for tennis shoes in Pilates! We suggest wearing pilates toe socks, which we have available to purchase. Socks keep your feet and the equipment and studio clean and sanitary. For physical therapy, please wear clothes that allow us to get to the injured area and bring a pair of tennis shoes with you.
Do men do Pilates
Yes! Men gain as much, if not more, benefit from beginning a Pilates program. They will gain balance, flexibility and strength in muscles that don't get trained or used in the gym or with traditional sports. Pilates will aide in recovery from back injuries and improve performance in recreational activities. No matter how much time you spend in the gym, Pilates will challenge you and add to your overall strength.
Should I be taking a vitamin or supplement?
Yes! Due to depleted minerals in the soil and toxins in the environment, we can no longer get all the vitamins and nutrients we need from the foods we eat. The American Medical Association says – and most doctors now agree - that every person should be taking a multi-vitamin.
What should I eat?
What you put in your body is just as important as the exercise you get. The foods you choose and your nutrition make a huge impact on your energy, inflammatory levels, stress, immune system and mood. We can meet with you individually to assess your diet and needs, and educate you on how and what to eat for permanent lifestyle changes.
