What Is Pilates?

Developed in the 1920’s by Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates Method is a form of exercise, injury rehabilitation, and overall body conditioning that incorporates posture, breathing, flexibility, balance and strengthening. By focusing specifically on abdominal control, pelvic stabilization, and neutral spine – what Pilates calls the “powerhouse” – a person is taught to stabilize the trunk while moving the arms and legs freely. The result is improved strength, energy and flexibility, and correction of body imbalances and poor movement patterns. The goal of Pilates training, beyond slimming and strengthening, is to teach you to be confident and in control of your body and to use it to your greatest advantage.

Harmony Pilates & Physical Therapy provides the most full service Pilates studios in Hawaii, offering Pilates equipment classes, private and semi-private Pilates sessions in a beautiful, professional and energizing environment. You will always work with a certified and highly qualified Pilates instructor. We have state-of–the-art Pilates equipment by Balanced Body, including the newest reformers on the market and other apparatus to aid you with your workouts. We have two locations in Hawaii – Kailua and Manoa. We have classes throughout the day and on weekends, so you have many options to make a Pilates workout fit into your schedule! We love our clients and love showing what Pilates can do for your body!

What You Need To Know

Pilates is a fantastic, effective and fun method of fitness. It makes a great addition to an already active lifestyle. It helps to improve muscle imbalances, flexibility, overall strength and endurance. Try Pilates and you will see improvements in all of your daily activities. It will improve how you sit and stand, how you move, walk and run, even how you perform skilled activities and sports.

We offer a variety of Pilates classes, as well as, private sessions, semi-private, trio sessions, and workshops. We can accommodate all activity levels from the beginner to the experienced Pilates client. We also have classes for Seniors, those coming off an injury or those who have been inactive. Do Pilates and you will feel and see the difference!

Our certified instructors provide 50 minute classes with small class sizes of 6 or 7 people, to ensure you receive individual attention and maintain proper form throughout the exercises. Our studios are equipped with the state of the art reformers with towers by Balanced Body.

The classes we offer include classic mat, reformer, mat-equipment combo (mat with the tower/Cadillac), restorative, prenatal, Jumpboard, Barre and other Pilates classes 7 days a week. See our class schedule for further class descriptions and times.

No prior experience is necessary to join our classes. We do provide a beginners evaluation and a basics class to help you get started comfortably. A few private Pilates training sessions are also beneficial to prepare you for classes. We offer new clients and those coming out of physical therapy a 3 pack or 5 pack of private sessions.

Harmony Pilates Class Types

Pilates Basics Class

If you are new to Pilates or the reformer, we recommend starting with our Pilates equipment Basics class. Here you will learn the fundamentals of the Pilates method. Core stability is the focus of this class – the ability to maintain neutral alignment of the spine, ribs and shoulders, while also working on improving overall strength, flexibility, articulation of the spine and mobility of the rest of the joints of the body. To get the most out of your workout, learn your fundamentals!

Beginner’s Evaluation

We also offer a beginner’s evaluation with one of our certified Pilates instructors. This includes a movement analysis to determine your readiness for Pilates, introduces you to the reformer on how to change springs, set up the equipment and some fundamental exercises, so that you are prepared for joining the appropriate class. A beginner’s evaluation is 50 minutes, costs $35 and can be scheduled by calling one of our offices or simply complete the Pilates contact form.

Therapeutic Pilates

If you have been inactive for a while, coming off an injury, have a chronic condition or are a Senior we recommend starting with our Therapeutic Pilates or Balance & Bones class. These classes are geared towards those who need a gentler pace and focus on restorative Pilates exercises.

Prenatal Pilates Classes

Our prenatal Pilates classes are the perfect workout for any stage of pregnancy! Join us to work on strength, flexibility, posture and breathing, all meant to keep you healthy and strong during this special time. This is also a perfect class for anyone looking to recover quickly after pregnancy. Classes are Tuesdays at 4:00 pm at our Kailua studio. However, you ladies are welcome to attend any of our classes. Just talk with the instructor first.

Private Classes

Do you have a group of friends, colleagues or a sports team who would like to experience the benefits of Pilates? We can provide private classes for your group, either a single session or a series of classes. Private Sessions

Private Pilates sessions are the cornerstone of any good personal training program. In these sessions you will receive one-on-one instruction from a certified Pilates instructor. Exercises will be based on your fitness level, injuries, goals and strengths. You will use a variety of Pilates apparatus and equipment, and learn the basic principles of Pilates and how to apply them in different areas of your life. Semi-Private or Trio Sessions

Want to work out with a friend, significant other, colleague or workout partner? We can also schedule semi-private or trio sessions where you will receive individualized instruction from one of our Pilates instructors. Tiffany Petty
Tiffany was first introduced to Pilates through an acute injury and was immediately drawn to how Pilates can completely reshape and strengthen the body in a unique way. She trained for many years in the classical method of Pilates, and was trained as a teacher with STOTT Pilates in 2012. Tiffany loves to create a dynamic class that is both fun and challenging and allows students to achieve the mind body connection. She feels there isn't anyone who can't benefit from Pilates! Tiffany is a marathon runner, former dancer and lover of people.

Yasha Siemienski
Yasha has always enjoyed being physically active - from kickboxing and yoga to golf and paddleboarding. She tried Pilates in 2007 and was hooked. She loved how it synthesized elements she had enjoyed in different types of exercise. As she learned more, she became passionate about Pilates' long-term benefits, and now considers Pilates crucial to improving and extending people's quality of life. Yasha trained as a teacher in the Stott Method of Pilates in 2008. Her training includes Mat, Reformer, Cadillac and Stability Chair, and she specializes in the senior, runner and prenatal populations. She aspires to help people create balance and energy in mind, body and spirit through beautifully trained movement!

Asa C Mills
Asa grew up in Washington state and Idaho and has been active in sports and fitness for most of his life including snowboarding as a teenager, collegiate rugby, and his ongoing passions for martial arts and surfing. In addition to the benefits of sports training, he has witnessed and personally experienced various sports injuries, which led him to earn his Bachelors Degree in Health Sciences from the University of Miami in 2009 and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from the University of Miami in 2012. There, as a student of Dr. Brent Anderson, he discovered Pilates and became a certified Pilates instructor with an emphasis on rehabilitation through Polestar Pilates. He went on to work at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA where he completed a residency in orthopedic physical therapy and became a board-certified orthopedic specialist (OCS). Dr. Mills has experience and expertise in manual therapy, strength training, injury prevention, joint mobilization, neural mobilization, and post-surgical rehabilitation. His wholistic treatment approach focuses on improving the overall wellness of his patients. When he is not treating patients or teaching Pilates, Dr. Mills enjoys surfing, diving, hiking, sailing, travel, muay thai, and playing music.

Samantha T. Reed
Samantha has a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and completed graduate studies in Biomechanics from the University of Toronto. She played basketball for U of T and the Canadian Jr. national team. She went on to study mat, equipment and therapeutic Pilates with Stott and Body Matrix, which is affiliated with Body Harmonics. She enjoys the great outdoors by hiking, snowboarding, bicycling, playing Ultimate, swimming and now surfing. I have studied and practiced Pilates since 1999 and I feel it is an integral part of my fitness and wellness.

Tara Tannenholz
Tara has been active all her life, starting with snowboarding in the mountains of of the western United States. She received her degree in Physiotherapy in Southern Australia in 2002, and moved to Hawaii shortly thereafter. She worked in various orthopedic outpatient settings before finding Pilates in 2010. She loves bringing her physical therapy background, knowledge and love for people together with Pilates concepts. She received her Pilates Mat Teacher Training through Harmony Pilates in 2011 and has recently completely her Pilates Equipment Teacher Training with us. She enjoys surfing and getting to the beach as much as possible.

Jessica Howard Chapman
Jessica is originally from Colorado but has grown roots here on Oahu over the past 12 years. Having always been active; snowboarding, surfing, dancing, running, yoga, she has found movement to be incredibly healing both physically and mentally. Since being introduced to Pilates in 2011, it has become her passion. Fully certified in mat and equipment from Body Balance along with pre/post-natal and neuromuscular rehabilatation Pilates, she has years of private and group class-based experience, dedicating herself to teaching others this method and helping them achieve their goals. As she get older, she is more and more about finding fulfillment in what she does. She believes to live a life full of passion and joy is the best service of all.

Moon Moniot
Moon spent many of her formative years doing gymnastics, and as a result significantly injured her knee and low back. Her rehabilitation experiences inspired her to pursue a career in physical therapy, and she received her Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California in 2003. She discovered Pilates around the same time, and it was instrumental in the healing process for her low back. After a decade of practicing Pilates, she completed the Harmony Mat and Equipment Teacher Training Program in 2012. Moon has 15 years of orthopedic physical therapy experience and specializes in manual therapy, movement reeducation, and therapeutic exercise. She has worked in a variety of clinics in California, Hawaii, Washington, Bali and Tokyo. Moon is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Graston Technique Provider. She enjoys integrating all of these specialties to help patients achieve their health and lifestyle goals. In her free time, she has a love for all things ocean to include swimming, scuba and free diving and surfing.

Laura Foster
Laura Foster received her Pilates Certification in 2008 from Core Conditioning Physical Therapy and Pilates thru Balanced Body University. As well as continuing education with Blossom Leilani Crawford and Courtney Miller. She has taught and worked with a wide array of clientele at studios throughout Los Angeles and Pittsburgh, PA. Laura studied Musical Theater and Dance at the University of Central Oklahoma before relocating to Los Angeles to dance, perform, and teach professionally. She was a principal dancer and rehearsal director for Winifred R. Harris’ Between Lines Contemporary Dance Co. touring America and abroad. Laura has as well taught ballet, and classical modern techniques for studios, non-profits, and dance companies including the Regina Klenjoski Dance Co, Joseph Allen Decker Dance Co, and the Music Center of Los Angeles. She has also appeared in regional commercials and film. After dancing professionally Laura found Pilates helped her recover from injuries, moving, and strong. Now here she is on this beautiful island, where she will continue teaching everything she has learned in a supportive and joyful environment.

Belle Knopf
Belle Knopf has been a teacher and instructor for over fifteen years. She has taught a variety of dance and yoga styles to children and adults. Belle grew up training to be a semi professional dancer at companies around the East Coast. Being passionate about how the body moved and reacted to breath, she continued her education pursing a dance therapy degree at Old Dominion University in Norfolk Virginia. Belle became a certified yoga instructor, a yoga trapeze instructor and a kickboxing coach. She has completed several workshops including yoga and anxiety and is certified in CPR. Currently Belle is continuing her fitness education with teaching training courses in Pilates mat and reformer. Once completed Belle will have over a thousand teacher training hours under her belt. Belle is excited to bring her knowledge and skill back into the studio. Her ultimate goal as an Pilates instructor is to help people find balance and strength so they can live fuller and healthier lives.

We also offer continuing education and PMA CECs through our own programming.

Please note that Harmony Pilates supports the Pilates Method Alliance and their work in the Pilates industry. We encourage our students to take the PMA exam once all requirements are met. Our teacher training programs strive to give our students all the knowledge they will need to pass this exam, including the 450 class hours required to sit for the exam.

If you have an injury or a prescription for physical therapy from your doctor, contact us to set up your first appointment and find out about insurance coverage. To start Pilates classes, click on our class schedule, find the class you want and sign up. You will be prompted to create an account and purchase a class package or membership. If you’d like to try first we have a $10 trial class for new clients only!
Keep in mind if you are new to Pilates and have never used the reformer, we highly suggest you take a beginner’s evaluation so we can help you choose the appropriate class. We believe that students should be trained in the true essence of Pilates – get a great workout, learn about their body, and have fun! You will get a beginner to advanced workout depending on the class you choose, and you will always be challenged no matter how fit or un-fit you are. We have two beautiful and comfortable studios, and instructors with years of experience and varying backgrounds, so you will never get bored and will want to come back for more.

How does Pilates fit in with my current workout program, and how often should I do it?2019-04-09T15:19:46-10:00

Pilates works well with all fitness programs and can enhance them. The core stabilization and strengthening exercises in Pilates will improve your performance in any sport or activity. Most people experience the highest benefit when doing Pilates two to three times a week. As Joseph Pilates quoted: “You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 and have a new body in 30 sessions.”

Pilates was actually first developed as a rehabilitation and physical therapy tool. It is ideal for injury recovery in that you will strengthen muscles while protecting your body and relearning proper movement patterns. If you feel limited in your injury, we recommend starting with the Beginner’s Evaluation. Some private Pilates sessions will help focus on your specific needs and can prepare you to join classes. If feel ready to try a class, you may want to start with the Pilates Equipment Basics or the Therapeutic Pilate’s classes. Contact Us Call us if you aren’t sure where to start! You may want to consider starting with Physical Therapy as it can address the specific injury or health condition and can prepare you for Pilates classes.

Can I lose weight with Pilates?2019-04-04T15:52:28-10:00

Yes! By using resistance and toning exercises and increasing your heart rate, Pilates can contribute to weight and fat loss and lean muscle development. Pilates training creates a longer leaner muscle tone not bulk. Ultimately weight loss is a result of diet along with proper and regular exercise. Working with a nutritional consultant and increasing your daily exercise will help you attain permanent weight loss.

What should I bring and/or wear?2019-04-09T15:56:39-10:00

Wear comfortable clothes to move in. For women we suggest exercise pants or short, sports bra and t-shirt/tank and for men we suggest exercise pants or shorts and a t-shirt. No need for sports shoes in Pilates! We suggest wearing Pilates’ toe socks they have sticky pads on the bottom so you won’t slide on the equipment. We have them available for purchase. Socks also keep your feet, the equipment and studio clean and sanitary. For physical therapy, please wear clothes that allow us to get to the injured area.

Do men do Pilates?2019-04-04T15:41:10-10:00

Yes! Men gain as much, if not more, benefit from a Pilates program. They will gain balance, flexibility and strength in muscles that don’t get trained or used in the gym or with traditional sports. Pilates will aide in recovery from back injuries and improve performance in recreational activities. No matter how much time you spend in the gym, Pilates will challenge you and add to your overall strength.
