What Is Pilates?

Developed in the 1920’s by Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates Method is a form of exercise, injury rehabilitation, and overall body conditioning that incorporates posture, breathing, flexibility, balance and strengthening. By focusing specifically on abdominal control, pelvic stabilization, and neutral spine – what Pilates calls the “powerhouse” – a person is taught to stabilize the trunk while moving the arms and legs freely. The result is improved strength, energy and flexibility, and correction of body imbalances and poor movement patterns. The goal of Pilates training, beyond slimming and strengthening, is to teach you to be confident and in control of your body and to use it to your greatest advantage.

What Sets Harmony Pilates Studio Apart?

Harmony Pilates & Physical Therapy is the most full service Pilates studio in Hawaii, offering individual lessons and group classes in a beautiful, professional and energizing environment. You will always work with a certified and highly qualified Pilates instructor. We have a variety of state-of–the-art Pilates equipment, including the newest reformers on the market, and apparatus to aid you in your workouts. We have two locations in Hawaii, as well as classes throughout the day and weekend, so you have many options to make a Pilates workout fit into your busy schedule! What you Need To Know:

Pilates is a great addition to any overall health and fitness plan.

If you are new to Pilates or the reformer, we recommend trying our Pilates equipment Basics class to start. No prior experience is needed before attending our Pilates equipment classes. If you are new to the reformer or have injuries, we do recommend starting with our Pilates basics class so you can learn the fundamental movements and get the most out of your workout!

Harmony Barre Plus Classes Our barre plus classes combine all of the toning and strengthening of barre work with the lengthening and challenge of the reformer! You will get the best of both worlds in this unique workout. Watch your muscles shake and feel your body transform.

Prenatal Pilates Classes Our prenatal pilates classes are the perfect workout for any stage of pregnancy! Join us for this 5 class series where you will work on strength, flexibility, posture and breathing, all meant to keep you healthy and strong during this special time. This is also a perfect class for anyone looking to get back into exercise after baby. No intro sessions are required. Classes are Sundays at 11:00am. The cost is $100 for 5 classes or $25 for a single class. This series will be held in our Kailua studio.

Pilates Classes

Pilates classes are a fun and energizing way to incorporate Pilates into your fitness regime. We offer a variety of equipment, barre and mat classes to meet your needs. Classes are 55 minutes long and class sizes are small to ensure you receive individual attention and maintain proper form throughout the exercises.

We offer three main types of Pilates classes: Equipment, Mat and Harmony Barre Plus.
Harmony Pilates equipment classes use the Pilates reformer and cadillac as the foundation of the class. There are over 5000 exercises you can do on this amazing and unique equipment, so you you will always be challenged and never get bored! You will use every muscle in your body to achieve proper form and flow, while working on strength, core muscles, flexibility and posture. If you want to really experience what Pilates has to offer, join our equipment classes!

No prior experience is needed before attending our Pilates equipment classes. If you are new to the reformer or have injuries, we do recommend starting with our Pilates basics class so you can learn the fundamental movements and get the most out of your workout.

Harmony Mat Classes are the foundation of any true Pilates program. Joseph Pilates first developed his exercises for the mat, and then expanded to the Pilates equipment. Mat work is meant to challenge your core and strengthen your muscles. You will use a variety of small apparatus such as the ring, foam roller and balls. This is a great compliment to the equipment work, and no previous experience is required.

Harmony Barre Plus Classes take traditional barre classes and bring them to the next level! Done at a ballet barre, we combine standing lunges, plies, squats and leg work with arm weights for a fast paced and challenging workout meant to tone and torch calories! We combine this with fun and challenging exercises on the Pilates reformer, mat and tower to give you core strengthening and a workout unlike any other. No previous experience is required.

Private Lessons

Private Pilates lessons are the cornerstone of any good Pilates or personal training program. In these 55 minute sessions you will receive one-on-one instruction from a certified Pilates instructor. Exercises will be based on your fitness level, injuries, goals and strengths. You will use a variety of Pilates apparatus and equipment, and learn the basic principles of Pilates and how to apply them in different areas of your life. Our Instructors

Tiffany Petty
Tiffany was first introduced to Pilates through an acute injury and was immediately drawn to how Pilates can completely reshape and strengthen the body in a unique way. She trained for many years in the classical method of Pilates, and was trained as a teacher with STOTT Pilates in 2012. Tiffany loves to create a dynamic class that is both fun and challenging and allows students to achieve the mind body connection. She feels there isn't anyone who can't benefit from Pilates! Tiffany is a marathon runner, former dancer and lover of people.

Yasha Siemienski
Yasha has always enjoyed being physically active - from kickboxing and yoga to golf and paddleboarding. She tried Pilates in 2007 and was hooked. She loved how it synthesized elements she had enjoyed in different types of exercise. As she learned more, she became passionate about Pilates' long-term benefits, and now considers Pilates crucial to improving and extending people's quality of life. Yasha trained as a teacher in the Stott Method of Pilates in 2008. Her training includes Mat, Reformer, Cadillac and Stability Chair, and she specializes in the senior, runner and prenatal populations. She aspires to help people create balance and energy in mind, body and spirit through beautifully trained movement!

Sheila Zapanta
Sheila was born in Chicago and grew up in the Philippines before moving to Hawaii in 2012. She is a fully certified STOTT Pilates instructor since 2007 and is trained on all apparatus. Sheila grew up around Pilates, as her mother is a lead instructor trainer for STOTT in her hometown. She is passionate about sharing her love for Pilates and the amazing life changing results she has experienced herself and seen in her clients. Sheila teaches barre, mat and equipment classes and private Pilates lessons at Harmony. She would love to have you join her exciting and personalized classes and sessions!

Kazuyo Sigler
Kazuyo was born and raised in Japan. As a youth I learned ballet and between the ages of 5 and 12 competed nationally in gymnastics. As an adult I have lived and worked in Japan, the United States, and Australia with my husband and two children. After my second child, I began to experience a painful, stiff neck and the build-up of stress from my work and taking care of my children, so I began to look for a way to exercise that was not too hard but good for my body and mind. My search led me to a Pilates video and I began to exercise on my own. But after a time, I realized that I needed instruction to correct my body movements. Ten years later, I am now a certified mat instructor of Pilates at Harmony, and have been teaching mat class in Japanese every Friday at Harmony's Aina Haina Studio since June 2004.

Emily Hodges Kant
Emily is an excellent Instructor Certified in Mat, Barre, and Reformer. As a dancer and choreographer in New York City and now Honolulu, Emily found herself lacking in the strength, stability and overall body connection she knew she needed. After trying numerous classes, she discovered Pilates and fell in love with its focus on core strength and total body awareness. Emily's passion is helping others at any level and stage of life discover their inner strength through alignment, stability, power and awareness.

Asa C Mills
Asa grew up in Washington state and Idaho and has been active in sports and fitness for most of his life including snowboarding as a teenager, collegiate rugby, and his ongoing passions for martial arts and surfing. In addition to the benefits of sports training, he has witnessed and personally experienced various sports injuries, which led him to earn his Bachelors Degree in Health Sciences from the University of Miami in 2009 and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) from the University of Miami in 2012. There, as a student of Dr. Brent Anderson, he discovered Pilates and became a certified Pilates instructor with an emphasis on rehabilitation through Polestar Pilates. He went on to work at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA where he completed a residency in orthopedic physical therapy and became a board-certified orthopedic specialist (OCS). Dr. Mills has experience and expertise in manual therapy, strength training, injury prevention, joint mobilization, neural mobilization, and post-surgical rehabilitation. His wholistic treatment approach focuses on improving the overall wellness of his patients. When he is not treating patients or teaching Pilates, Dr. Mills enjoys surfing, diving, hiking, sailing, travel, muay thai, and playing music.

Samantha T. Reed
Samantha has a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and completed graduate studies in Biomechanics from the University of Toronto. She played basketball for U of T and the Canadian Jr. national team. She went on to study mat, equipment and therapeutic Pilates with Stott and Body Matrix, which is affiliated with Body Harmonics. She enjoys the great outdoors by hiking, snowboarding, bicycling, playing Ultimate, swimming and now surfing. I have studied and practiced Pilates since 1999 and I feel it is an integral part of my fitness and wellness.

Samantha Nelson
Samantha, Certified Pilates Mat Instructor and Licensed Massage Therapist, fell in love with Pilates thru a back injury! She injured her back during the summer of 2014, and after several Doctor's visits she took matters into her own hands. She began one on one sessions, and by the end of her first session she was moved to tears from the pain relief she experienced. Knowing that she had found a great pain management tool, she started on her journey. Samantha truly loves Pilates because of the strength, flexibility, and mobility it provides. Samantha is a certified Pilates Mat Instructor and has been a Licensed Massage Therapist for over 16 years in Hawaii. Samantha has completed her Reformer Pilates training and is Instructing Reformer Classes as well as Mat Classes at Harmony. She is also certified in Chinese Fire Cupping and has taken and passed the MBLEx exam of the FSMTB. Samantha attended the Honolulu School of Massage and graduated from the University of Hawaii. She plans to continue her Pilates education and training while teaching.

Christina Black
Christina was born in here in Hawaii, Christina has always been active and artistic. After graduating from Colorado State University with a degree in mechanical engineering, she decided to change her path completely and moved to New York City to pursue dance professionally. She unfortunately sustained many injuries, but through these hardships she discovered her love of Pilates. Christina has completed her comprehensive certification through Balanced Body in New York but has also been teaching on Stott and Peak equipment in Los Angeles. She is thrilled to bring her Pilates knowledge back to the Islands and to be a part of the Harmony Pilates team. She hopes to inspire her clients through movement, alignment and breath.

Cassidy Enders
Cassidy is an exercise and nutrition enthusiast. Cassidy is Certified to instruct Reformer Pilates, Cadillac style, Springbar, Exo Chair, Magic Ring, Box, BenderBall, Bosu Ball, TRX, Hand Weights, Gliders and Resistance Bands. She's also Certified to teach Spinning, Ballet Barre, Core Flyte and Trigger Point Therapy. She comes to Harmony from the San Francisco area and has instructed at Club Pilates and IMX Pilates. Cassidy started in Soccer and Gymnastics at a young age as well.

Tara Tannenholz
Tara has been active all her life, starting with snowboarding in the mountains of of the western United States. She received her degree in Physiotherapy in Southern Australia in 2002, and moved to Hawaii shortly thereafter. She worked in various orthopedic outpatient settings before finding Pilates in 2010. She loves bringing her physical therapy background, knowledge and love for people together with Pilates concepts. She received her Pilates Mat Teacher Training through Harmony Pilates in 2011 and has recently completely her Pilates Equipment Teacher Training with us. She enjoys surfing and getting to the beach as much as possible.

We also offer continuing education and PMA CECs through our own programming.

Please note that Harmony Pilates supports the Pilates Method Alliance and their work in the Pilates industry. We encourage our students to take the PMA exam once all requirements are met. Our teacher training programs strive to give our students all the knowledge they will need to pass this exam, including the 450 class hours required to sit for the exam.

If you have an injury or a prescription from your doctor for physical therapy, contact us to set up your first physical therapy appointment and find out about insurance coverage. To start Pilates classes, Click here to see our schedule and sign up. Keep in mind if you have never used the reformer, we highly suggest you take our beginners evaluation class so you can be directed to choose the appropriate class or private for your very own special needs and fit. You can Contact Us to schedule a private lesson where a beginner evaluation is not necessary, since you will be getting individual attention through the private session itself.

We believe that students should be trained in the true essence of Pilates, while also getting a great workout, learning about their body, and having fun! You will get a beginner to advanced workout depending on the class you choose, and you will always be challenged. We have a beautiful and comfortable studio, and instructors with years of experience and varying backgrounds, so you will never get bored and will want to come back for more.

Will I do Pilates during physical therapy? 2017-12-07T10:40:35+00:00

All of our physical therapists are trained Pilates instructors and will be able to use the Pilates equipment for your therapy if you choose and it’s deemed appropriate. Pilates is not the only thing we do in physical therapy, so if it’s not a fit for you we have many different tools to use!

Pilates fits in great with all fitness programs. You will often find that the core stabilization and abdominal exercises in Pilates will improve your performance in your chosen sport or activity. Most people experience the highest benefit when doing Pilates or coming to physical therapy two to three times a week.

Pilates was actually first developed as a rehabilitation and physical therapy tool. It is ideal for injury recovery in that you will strengthen muscles while protecting your body and relearning proper movement patterns. If you feel limited in your injury, we recommend starting with the Beginner’s Evaluation class and then progressing to Pilates sessions if you choose to. If you are ready to try a class, you may want to start with the introductory class or low back care class. Contact Us us if you aren’t sure where to start!

Yes! By using resistance and toning exercises and increasing your heart rate, Pilates can contribute to weight and fat loss and muscle development. At Harmony Pilates & Physical Therapy we believe in a three-tiered system for ultimate health – exercise, eating well and proper supplementation. We will teach all three with our Healthy for Life Program so that you will see permanent weight loss and health results!

Yes! Men gain as much, if not more, benefit from beginning a Pilates program. They will gain balance, flexibility and strength in muscles that don’t get trained or used in the gym or with traditional sports. Pilates will aide in recovery from back injuries and improve performance in recreational activities. No matter how much time you spend in the gym, Pilates will challenge you and add to your overall strength.
